BALLINTUBBER CLG – ONWARDS AND UPWARDS!

Though winter, with its rain and wind has revisited us, a warm glow has descended on the Club and Parish. Many are rejoicing at another County Senior football Championship win in 2014. Our talented and highly committed 32 man senior panel and their management team of Peter, Tony, the two Jim’s, Ger and Ruaidhri are deserving of the highest credit for this magnificent win.

Likewise my fellow Club Officers & Executive, our generous sponsors, those who cater for the players on Tuesday nights, Bord na nOg coaches, our pitch grounds men, and all who support the lotto and Gold Patron Scheme, they too have contributed to this great success. It is very fulfilling to witness all the fruits of so much hard work by many people culminating in such a wonderful proud occasion.

We can progress from here this season (and in future seasons) confident in our ability, sustained by our level of organisation, and wholly focussed on the challenges ahead. None of us should burden the team and management with the weight of our expectations realistic or otherwise. Let the team and management train, prepare and perform and we will support them logistically in every way possible.

Warm congratulations to Cillian O Connor on his achievement in winning his first All Star Award. It is a tremendous honour for the O Connor family and the Club.

Best wishes also to Carnacon ladies team with their Connacht Final on Sunday next, October 26th. We hope 2014 will be a repeat of 2013 when the club clinched National Club honours.

Ballintubber G.A.A. Club would like to thanks the Mayo Senior team & Management for another remarkable season that came to an end on Saturday evening in the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick after extra-time against Kerry in the All-Ireland Semi-Final replay!! It was hard to take as the team had unfinished business from 2012 & 2013 but no stone was left unturned and in the end it was the fresher legs that pulled through perhaps although this group owe nothing to the Mayo supporters. They put their lives on hold for Mayo football and after 4 Connacht titles plus 2 All-Ireland final appearances James Horan stepped down as Manager shortly after. It will be a hard act to follow and no doubt James will be offered many opportunities after the experience where the Club are extremely proud of your achievements and would like to wish you the very best in whatever you do in the future.

Last Sunday in Croke Park it was an emotional day for both the Mayo Senior & Minor teams where brave performances was the tone of the day. The 2013 All-Ireland Minor Champions were relieved of their crown despite putting in a gutsy performance but the loss of key forward and captain Cian Hanley in the opening half proved just too much while our own Dave Clarke did well coming on a second half sub during the 1-14 to 2-7 defeat.
If ever any person in this small country of ours ever doubted the heart, resolve and persistance of this Mayo Senior team, then the second half on Sunday won many admirers during the unforgettable 1-16 draw with Munster champions Kerry. After having a unusually flat performance in the first half where our own Cillian O'Connor and Alan Dillon kept Mayo in touch with important points where they trailed 0-9 to 0-5 at the break while Lee Keegan was harshly red-carded during the 33rd minute. The second half saw a Mayo team who would not buckle, fought for every ball and won a lot of ball they had no right to win. Led by captain Cillian O'Connor, Alan Dillon, Aidan O'Shea and Colm Boyle in particular, the team who were urged on by a huge Mayo crowd, the Connacht Champions wore down the Kingdom. Points from Cillian O'Connor as well as an excellently converted penalty while Alan Dillon proved his worth again and when they led 1-15 to 0-13 with just over 5 minutes to go it looked as if they may have done enough. But credit to Kerry who came back to score their only goal courtesy of James O'Donaghue as well as help from Kieran Donaghy saw them nearly nick the game before the final whistle blew. It was best half of football in this years Championship as has the Country looking forward to next Saturday's replay in the unusual location of the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick at 5pm. While Jason Gibbons did start at midfield he was replaced at the break and he will no doubt get a chance at some stage next Saturday to show what he can do!

Congrats to our Junior team who picked up 2 important wins on Sunday to book a place in next years County Junior A Championship as well as moving up to third in Division 1C following wins over Knockmore B and Mayo Gaels respectively!! Check further details in Match Reports section!!

Congrats to the Mayo Senior & Minor teams after they both booked an All-Ireland semi-final place after wins over Cork & Armagh respectively in Croke Park on Sunday!! The Senior team were pushed all the way by former champions Cork in a cracker with score ending up 1-19 to 2-15 where both Cillian O'Connor and Alan Dillon scored a total of 0-9 between them. Cillian scored 4 from frees as well as a point from play while Alan was one of Mayo's top players with 4 points from play in gutsy performance while Jason Gibbons was introduced in the closing moments. Next up is Munster champions Kerry in less than 3 weeks time while the Minor team also take on the Kingdom in the opening game following their impressive 3-13 to 0-9 win over Armagh. Dave Clarke was introduced in the second half at right-half back in a convincing performance. Keep it up boys!!

Congrats to our Senior team who blew aside a disappointing Crossmolina side in the final group game to book a place in the knock-out stages of the Mayo Senior Championship for a remarkable 7th season in a row!! Full-forward Cillian O'Connor was his accurate self with an array of frees along with a '45 to guide the Abbeysiders through while 1-3 and 1-1 from substitutes Alan Plunkett and Alan Dillon respectively to ensure an impressive 2-18 to 1-2 win!

Unfortunately our Junior team were unable to add to the Senior teams win when they fell short 2-12 to 2-5 to end their Championship ambitions.
